Jyllian Gunther is an Emmy-winning writer and director. She has worked extensively across multiple mediums, from theatre to kids television to verité documentary films. Through this wide range of experience she has developed a strong sense of story structure and a keen sense for detail. She is known for her ability to draw comedic, heartfelt characters with unique voices, young women in particular. Jyllian Gunther is an Emmy-winning writer and director. She has worked extensively across multiple mediums, from theatre to kids television to verité documentary films. Through this wide range of experience she has developed a strong sense of story structure and a keen sense for detail. She is known for her ability to draw comedic, heartfelt characters with unique voices, young women in particular. Jyllian began her writing career as a playwright, attended NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts and San Francisco State’s MFA program. She had numerous plays produced in San Francisco and New York City including an off broadway production at The Samuel Beckett Theatre. Her first job in television was as a staff writer at Nickelodeon where she created short content for their acclaimed Story Lab and the promo department. Soon after, she won an Emmy for her work as writer, director, and co-producer on a PBS educational PSA series. Additional series credits include:
NPR's This American Life; The New Yorker Presents for JigSaw/Amazon; Emmy-winning series' Who Do You Think You Are for NBC and Postcards from Buster for PBS; Six part series, The Last Defense for ABC, One hour documentary, Black Patriots for A&E (also Showunner) As a filmmaker, Jyllian has made two short narratives that were official selections at numerous festivals. Her first feature documentary, Pull Out, was critically acclaimed and played the festival circuit. Her second documentary, The New Public, aired on PBS, is distributed by Kino Lorber worldwide. She is currently in post production on her third documentary, Sunset and the Mockingbird. This unprecedented time has given her the opportunity to get back to writing, which is her true passion. In addition to Pleased To Meet Me, she is working on another feature and a half hour single camera comedy.
