Undue Influence

An unscrupulous and money hungry debt collector is forced to make hard choices when she becomes the target of a wrongful death law suit.

Sydney Franklin, an ambitious debt collector whose ethics have been called into question, becomes the subject of a Human Resources (HR) investigation after allegedly threatening Daniel Davenport, a well-connected businessman. After Mr. Davenport's suicide, his wife Nadine files a civil lawsuit for wrongful death against the collection agency, citing Sydney's actions as a key factor in the case. These legal proceedings prompt an internal inquiry naming Sydney as the principal respondent. In response, her manager, Malcolm—who has a history of endorsing assertive collection strategies—attempts to deflect responsibility by implicating Sydney. Sydney is subsequently called to an HR meeting, where she is informed that the company will support her legal defense unless substantive evidence supporting Nadine’s claims emerges. Should she be found at fault, Sydney faces termination and financial liability. Acknowledging the seriousness of these developments, Sydney consults Lamar, a trusted former colleague, who reveals that his own dismissal was likely due to reporting fraudulent activities within the department, potentially involving Malcolm. With limited recourse, Sydney decides to utilize this information despite Lamar’s reservations. In pursuit of exoneration, Sydney works to integrate with the group involved in unethical activities. Through calculated engagement, she uncovers extensive fraudulent practices directed by Malcolm. To amass tangible evidence, Sydney must earn the confidence of both the group and Malcolm, which she achieves by presenting a plan designed to increase their illicit gains. During the investigation, Ellis—a returning employee from family leave—assumes the position of Senior Quality Assurance Analyst in Collections. While this change initially causes Sydney concern, she trusts that her prior actions will remain undiscovered. As Sydney concentrates on exposing Malcolm, Ellis considers pursuing a personal relationship with her. Encouraged by his genuine intentions, Sydney reciprocates his interest. Meanwhile, Jasmine, a colleague previously involved with Ellis and implicated in departmental misconduct, learns of Sydney and Ellis’s association. Seeking reprisal, Jasmine undermines Sydney, leading to her dismissal and straining her rapport with Ellis.
