Objective
Our intention is to help open doors for the aspiring television writer. There are four categories you can submit to, which include 1 hour existing spec scripts, 1/2 hour existing sitcom spec scripts, original pilots, and reality programs. This competition is designed with the TV writer and crossover screenwriter in mind.The participants we have chosen to read the winning scripts are individuals from established production companies. Whether you are already an aspiring television writer or a writer interested in exploring other avenues, Scriptapalooza TV is here to promote careers in television and provide exposure for the undiscovered writer.
Rules
- Any spec script from any existing television show, or any original television pilot will be considered. Reality shows are accepted also.
- Entered scripts may not have been previously sold.
- Multiple entries are accepted, provided a signed entry form and appropriate entry fee is attached to each submission.
- Multiple authorship is acceptable.
- Scripts must be the original work of the author(s),18 or older.
- Scriptapalooza recommends registering your script with The Library of Congress.
- No substitutions of new drafts or corrected pages for script entries will be accepted under any circumstances.
- Emailed entry must be accompanied by the following:
a. Completed official entry form
b. Entry fee
c. Completed original script - Submit scripts in English only.
- Do not send originals. Scripts will not be returned under any circumstances.
- Please submit your entry with all your information on the cover page: The title, author's name, address, phone number and email address.
- Body pages must be numbered.
- Scripts must be in television standard format.
- Entry in the competition is void where prohibited by law.
Awards
The television competition is awarding over $3000 in cash prizes.
We are giving awards in the following categories:
- Pilot Category
- 1/2 Hour Category
- 1 Hour Category
- Reality Shows
All the winners will be sent to over 50 producers, managers and agents.
After Scriptapalooza announces the TV winners we do call and promote the 12 winners to all of our contacts. Also we do get calls from interested agents, managers and producers looking to read the top winners. The goal of Scriptapalooza TV is to connect writers with producers, managers and agents...people that can make a difference in a writer’s career.

Scriptapalooza Interviews TV Spec Category Winner Jarred Katz
How did you come up with your story idea?
I've written a few specs, and always wanted to include an insane character,
but most shows don't really allow for it. For instance, when I had Grace
shopping for make-up, and being suddenly and repeatedly bitten by an escaped
mental patient, many people advised me that wouldn't really fit the story
structure of Will & Grace. Who knew? I laughed. Anyway, when I decided
to write a Scrubs, I knew right away that it's exactly the kind of show that
begged for a character like my crazy man, Davey.
How long did it take you to write it?
Phew. My beat sheet and first draft probably took two weeks. And then
there were several months of revisions based on notes from friends,
colleagues, and "the voices."
Is this your first script that you have written?
No. I have six spec teleplays, one original sitcom, and one screenplay.
Right now, I'm in the middle of a second original sitcom and a new spec
teleplay.
Have you entered other screenwriting competitions?
I have.
If so, have you been successful?
I've placed as a finalist in several competitions for different scripts, but
if by the word "successful," you mean have I won a competition before, this
is my first!
Why did you enter Scriptapalooza?
It's one of the most respected contests for sitcom writers and the name is
fun to say. Especially backwards...and drunk.
Advice to other screenwriters?
Go away. Who needs the competition? Actually, I guess it's the advice I
keep getting here in L.A., which is to keep writing and writing and writing.
How did you feel when you saw your name as one of the winners?
I was stunned. I still am. It's a wonderful surprise. And later the same
day I found out I won, Bea Arthur lifted the restraining order, so you can
imagine I was flying!
If you could write for any TV show, which one would it be?
It's a four-way tie between Will & Grace, Scrubs, Ed and Andy Richter
Controls the Universe.
