Shooter on the Grassy Knoll (new as of 6-7-22) new excerpt 1-17-23

A man suffering from schizophrenia and lack of self-esteem fires one of the fatal shots into President Kennedy from a grassy knoll then finds the conscience he never knew he had lost in a New Mexico desert with two disabled sisters: one blind and one a deaf-mute.

Carl Mays is a twenty-eight year old man who was badgered by his abusive father as a child and diagnosed with schizophrenia as an adult, leaving him with a lack of self-esteem that pushes him to the edge. The only thing Carl’s father ever taught him in a fatherly way was how to shoot a rifle. Carl’s father had been a sniper in World War 2 and trained Carl with the same weapon he had taken lives with. Carl’s ability to bull’s-eye his target with ease is the only confidence he has in his self. A chance meeting with Lee Harvey Oswald on the same Dallas gun range they practice on changes Carl’s life forever. Oswald has witnessed Carl’s ability with a rifle at the range and befriends Carl, offering to make arrangements to set up a meeting with an associate who can make Carl rich. Carl, jobless and broke doesn’t hesitate to take Oswald up on his offer. Carl becomes the second shooter in the Kennedy assassination and the one that got away. On Carl’s escape from Dallas his car breaks down on a highway in the Chihuahuan desert. Carl takes it on foot into the desolate desert where he meets his father’s ghost and is rescued by two disabled sisters in a four wheel drive vehicle making their way through the desert. Selina is legally blind and the driver of the vehicle and her sister, Blanch, is totally deaf. Selina and Blanch communicate with each other through telepathy. While Selina is cold and emotionless Blanch has a heart and eyes for Carl. Carl’s time with the sisters and the nightmares he experiences every time he closes his eyes of the act he committed leave something with Carl he never knew he had: a conscience. The newly acquired conscience now the driving force on his return to Dallas and confession to his deed to Dallas Homicide detectives, though without any collaborating evidence he mistakenly left in the desert with the sisters.
