A deeply troubled man with little hope in life, is thrust into a world between life and death, which may provide the purpose he has long been searching for.

Doyle Grayson, a man with a darker thought of life, not sure what his purpose is, suffers from extreme depression and thoughts of suicide. He visits Dr. Helen Strauss, a psychiatrist for help. Doyle lives with his girlfriend Alex York, who tries to help Doyle, understand his problems and offer support. After an altercation about money with Doyle’s father John Grayson, Doyle gets comfort from his AA friend Chuck Barrow. The comfort is short lived when a bad phone call about a job opportunity, causes Doyle to be upset and over the edge resulting in an accident and he is in a coma for a week.

After coming out of a coma and leaving the hospital, Doyle starts to notice he can see and hear the dead. He meets Jack Hardin, a deceased man who acts as a caretaker of the dead at a cemetery. He tells Doyle that the dead souls actually remain in a dream like slumber for eternity. If they don’t, it could be catastrophic for the entire living world, as the souls can combust and may cause a nuclear war to break out. Doyle realizes he was “bumped” in between life and death can possibly find purpose in helping the dead.

While trying to help a woman who was murdered by a serial killer, Doyle gets mixed up in a couple of investigations and meets two detectives Mick Rouney and Tom Clouse who question Doyle about the cases. Doyle, not wanting to sound too crazy, lies and says he is psychic and that’s how he has the info. Doyle gives them information that the murdered girl relayed to him about the serial killer. The detective’s still dismiss Doyle as crazy but are instructed by their Chief ,John Hallerton to keep an eye on him, as their prime suspect.

As Doyle attempts to try to tell people or prove how he knows things, he confides in Chuck, and while Chuck believes him, Doyle finds it quite impossible to convince others. Doyle devises a plan to prove to Dr. Strauss what he has been seeing , but it backfires and he, loses her support for good. At an AA meeting Doyle infuriates a man at the group when he tells everyone there is no heaven or hell, just an eternal dream state of nothingness.

Doyle, who is now unknowingly being watched and stalked by the serial killer, tries again to convince detectives Rouney giving him information from another female murder victim about the serial killer. After Doyle finds it involves someone on the police force and who it really is, goes on the run.

Doyle now being hounded by deceased for various reasons and fearful to be in a mental institution or prison, decides he and Alex need to get away for a while. With Rouney and Clouse hot on Doyle’s trail, what results next, is a complete shock for Doyle and Alex.
