THE DARK ONE

When a bullied girl’s shadow begins protecting her in terrifying ways, she discovers a hidden world where wounded souls create powerful dark guardians—and hers may be the most dangerous of all.

"The Dark One" is a supernatural drama that follows the journey of Joy, a young girl who survives severe abuse and trauma, and her healing journey guided by Luci, an elderly shaman with mystical powers. The story weaves together elements of magic realism, healing, and redemption. The story opens at Luci's home during an art studio tour. Luci, a 60-year-old shaman, can see people's shadows (their spiritual essences) and communes with The Dark One, her own shadow essence. During the tour, Luci notices concerning dynamics between several characters, including Sandy (a cheerleader) and her controlling boyfriend Hugo, whose shadow emanates putrid energy. The central conflict begins when Joy, a troubled young girl living across the street with her abusive mother, catches Luci's attention. Joy's cat Zilla is injured in an accident, leading to a confrontation between Joy's mother and Luci. Shortly after, Joy and her mother are involved in a serious car accident. Joy ends up in a coma, and her mother is arrested. To save Joy's life, Luci performs a spiritual ritual that separates Joy's essence (Dark Joy) from her physical body. This separation allows Joy's body to heal while her spirit essence remains active. However, this creates a complex dynamic between Joy and Dark Joy, who represents her emotional core and trauma. Throughout the story, Luci and The Dark One work to help various troubled souls in the community. They intervene in the lives of Joshua and Raptor, two brothers dealing with suicidal thoughts, and Gina and Grant, a troubled couple whose toxic relationship threatens their baby's wellbeing. In a particularly dramatic sequence, The Dark One takes Gina and Grant on a terrifying journey through Hell to shock them into changing their ways. Meanwhile, Joy's mother undergoes her own transformation in prison, working with therapy horses and gradually confronting her abusive behavior. She earns her GED and begins to understand the depth of harm she caused her daughter. The story also follows several subplots involving other characters in need of help: - Sandy, trapped in an abusive relationship with Hugo - Mai and her brother, the Skateboard Trickster, dealing with their parents' domestic violence - Spider and other troubled teens who need guidance As Joy recovers and begins living with Luci as her foster mother, she struggles to integrate her separated self (Dark Joy) back into her being. This internal conflict represents her journey to accept and heal from her trauma. Joy channels her experiences into creating a successful comic book series featuring The Dark One, Rascal (Luci's crow familiar), and Zilla. The climax occurs at Joy's book signing at Rotolo's bookstore. The event brings together all the characters whose lives have been touched by Joy and Luci's intervention. Joy's mother, now on parole and wearing an ankle monitor, attends the signing, showing how far she's come in her rehabilitation. The celebration is interrupted by the appearance of Hugo and Dark Hugo, representing the darkness that still threatens their community. However, Joy, now fully integrated with Dark Joy, stands alongside Luci and The Dark One to face this threat, demonstrating her growth and healing.
