THE MIDNIGHT DRIVER

A cruel drunk becomes the last man to die on New Year’s Eve - for the next year, he is condemned to reap the dead as the Midnight Driver and face the people he's harmed.

Bill Sykes meets A Christmas Carol - On New Year’s Eve in a small 1912 town, David Holm, a broken man with a violent past and a talent for self-destruction, drinks himself toward oblivion. His marriage has collapsed, and his two young children live in fear of the chaos he brings. Yet one person refuses to give up on him: Sister Edith, a gentle Salvation Army worker whose compassion borders on reckless hope. As midnight approaches, Edith lies dying of tuberculosis. In her final hours she asks for one thing—to see David Holm. But David refuses. Instead, he stumbles into a cemetery brawl and is struck down at the stroke of twelve. According to an old legend, the final soul to perish each New Year’s Eve becomes the next Driver of the Death Cart — an ancient, creaking carriage drawn by a blind, bone-thin horse  guided by a ghostly coachman who gathers the lost, damned, or wandering dead for a year. David awakens to the current Driver: George, a former friend who introduced him to the life that damned him. Dragged through the night in the spectral cart, David witnesses the consequences of his cruelty: his wife on the brink of despair; his children huddled together, cold and terrified; and Sister Edith, delirious but still praying for his redemption. For the first time, David is forced to face what others endured because of him. When George takes him to Edith’s deathbed, the reality shatters him. She got sick from mending his filthy coat and the responsibility of her death is his.  Overwhelmed with regret for his cruelty and control, Reaper David finds his wife preparing a desperate act that will end her life and their children’s. Against the rules of the underworld, George grants him one fragile chance. David reenters his cold, dead body.
