Snare

A naive doctor makes a desperate choice to consume experimental medications. The results reveal a terrifying force working against him.

SNARE Feature Film Synopsis by Lorna Norrise

Set against the backdrop of a Victorian city divided by wealth and poverty, SNARE is a gothic psychological thriller that explores the dangerous consequences of ambition, sacrifice, and the darkness that can exist within even the most compassionate soul.

Dr. Henry Jekyl is a brilliant young physician whose greatest burden is not poverty—it is the chronic pain in his malformed foot. Forced to walk with a noticeable limp since childhood, Henry has endured years of ridicule, humiliation, and whispered insults. Although his disability has never weakened his compassion, it has robbed him of confidence and convinced him that happiness may forever remain beyond his reach.

Despite his own suffering, Henry devotes his life to serving others. He operates a small medical practice in one of the city's poorest neighborhoods, refusing to turn away patients who cannot afford treatment. Instead of charging fees, he survives through the generosity of several wealthy businessmen who quietly finance his clinic out of charity. Henry believes medicine should be available to everyone, regardless of social standing or wealth.

Outside the clinic, Henry's heart belongs to Muriel, a beautiful and gracious young woman from one of the city's wealthiest families. Unlike others, Muriel sees beyond Henry's limp and modest circumstances. She admires his kindness, integrity, and unwavering dedication to helping those society has forgotten. Although Henry believes their different social classes make romance impossible, Muriel's affection grows stronger with every encounter, giving Henry hope that he might one day overcome both his physical limitations and his self-doubt.

That hope is suddenly threatened when Henry's benefactors unexpectedly withdraw their financial support. Tired of investing their fortunes in the city's poor, they abandon the struggling clinic, leaving Henry desperate to save the only place where hundreds receive medical care. Faced with closing his practice and turning away those who depend upon him, Henry desperately searches for another solution.

His longtime friend, Robert, offers what appears to be the answer. Robert introduces Henry to his father, the brilliant but controversial Professor Douglas, an ambitious scientist conducting highly experimental medical research. Douglas has spent years developing chemical compounds he believes can unlock the hidden potential of the human body, but he lacks willing volunteers to test his formulas.

Professor Douglas proposes a bargain. If Henry agrees to become the subject of his experimental medications, Douglas will generously fund the doctor's medical practice, ensuring it remains open to serve the poor. Already longing for freedom from the relentless pain in his foot and believing the treatments might finally allow him to live normally—and perhaps build a future with Muriel—Henry accepts the dangerous arrangement despite repeated warnings about unpredictable side effects.

At first, the experiments appear miraculous. Henry's pain disappears. His movements become stronger and more confident than ever before. But each successive treatment produces alarming changes neither Henry nor Douglas fully understands.

As darkness falls each evening, Henry unknowingly transforms into another man altogether.

His body twists into a grotesque reflection of himself, his face becoming frighteningly distorted. The gentle physician vanishes, replaced by Mister Hyde, a violent, vulgar, merciless creature consumed by rage, cruelty, and unchecked impulse. Hyde delights in intimidation, brutality, and destruction, acting upon every impulse Henry has spent a lifetime suppressing.

Completely unaware of his nighttime transformations, Henry awakens each morning exhausted and plagued by disturbing dreams, unable to explain mysterious bruises, bloodstains, and missing hours. Meanwhile, Hyde's terrifying violence escalates throughout the city.

Two innocent people are brutally murdered.

Assigned to the baffling investigation is the meticulous and relentless Inspector Moss, whose reputation for solving impossible crimes has earned him the respect of Scotland Yard. Examining every clue, interviewing frightened witnesses, and reconstructing Hyde's path through the city, Moss discovers that each murder is connected by subtle evidence leading toward an unlikely suspect.

As Hyde's attacks become increasingly savage, Henry begins experiencing terrifying flashes of memory and horrifying visions that blur the boundary between nightmare and reality. When he discovers evidence linking himself to the murders, he realizes that the monster terrorizing the city is not someone else—it is the monstrous identity growing within him.

Consumed by guilt and horror, Henry desperately searches for a cure before Hyde permanently overtakes his soul.

Professor Douglas, fascinated by the unprecedented results of his experiments, refuses to stop the research. Obsessed with scientific discovery and blind to its moral consequences, Douglas believes Hyde represents the next stage of human evolution rather than a catastrophic failure. Their partnership collapses into a bitter confrontation as Henry demands the experiments end forever, while Douglas insists they continue regardless of the deadly consequences.

Inspector Moss finally uncovers the truth, bringing together the final pieces of an investigation that reveals the impossible connection between Henry Jekyl and Mister Hyde. As Hyde gains greater control over Henry's mind and body, Moss races to stop a killer whose greatest weapon is that he exists inside another man.

The story builds toward two explosive confrontations. Henry first faces Professor Douglas, whose obsession has unleashed unimaginable horror upon the city. Soon afterward, Hyde emerges for one final night, leading to a violent struggle with Inspector Moss. A desperate battle unfolds as Hyde attempts to murder the inspector before anyone can stop him.

In the climactic moments, vengeance catches up with the monster. A gunshot brings Hyde's reign of terror to an abrupt end. As life slowly leaves his body, the monstrous features fade away, and Hyde transforms one final time into the dying Henry Jekyl.

Freed at last from the nightmare that imprisoned his soul, Henry finds peace in his final moments. Looking toward Muriel, he speaks his last words—not of fear, regret, or revenge—but with quiet relief that he has known genuine love before closing his eyes forever.

SNARE is a haunting tale of compassion corrupted by unchecked ambition, illustrating how desperation can ensnare even the noblest heart. Blending gothic horror, psychological suspense, mystery, and tragic romance, the story examines the eternal struggle between humanity's capacity for selfless goodness and its darkest hidden impulses.
