After Erica kills a stagehand she wrongly believes responsible for the accident, her friend, MADAME GIRY, hides the diva in the catacombs beneath the opera and helps her escape from France. On shipboard, the PERSIAN befriends her and Erica finds some "sanity" as an assassin in the service of the Shah of Persia.
Years later, her gender discovered, she must again flee. She returns to Paris and to the opera. There, currents of love and of revenge rip at her veneer of sanity. Her passions force her to kill and kill again, until she kills her only friend -- Madame Giry. Then, Erica must confront the monster that she has become: The Phantom of the Opera.
