BATTER UP

Screenplay Festival 2007, Honorable Mention for Comedy. When a minor leaguer falls for the ace pitcher in college softball, he finds that success in the majors and in love requires more than hitting the ball, he also needs to grow up.

DAN MCCALISTER, a minor league outfielder, can beat anyone on the baseball diamond. The problem is that MANDY ANDERSON strikes out her batters with a softball. In fact, Mandy, the premier college pitcher, will lead Team U.S.A. in softball's return to the Olympics.

Their relationship is national NEWS. It survives paparazzi and even Dan's immaturity because the celebrities love each other -- that is, until the day that Mandy strikes Dan out on national television with a change-up. Dan slams his metal bat on home plate so hard the bat bends almost in half. The image of Dan staring at his bent bat, broadcast across the nation, follows him to the majors.

Dan must battle that image if he hopes to establish himself. Even when he makes it, he must confront his shortcomings and await Mandy's answer when he proposes to her on national TV at the Women's College Softball World Series in Omaha.

Author Bio:
If life is a three act drama, screenwriting must be my fifth act. Born in Charleston South Carolina, I received an undergraduate degree in history from Univ. of South Carolina, magna cum laude. I graduated from two of the nation's best med schools with a J.D. from Duke and a Ph.D. in Political Science from Johns Hopkins. This was my poetry phase with 100 poems in magazines, newspapers, and anthologies.

In my next act, I taught at the University of Texas.
