Synopsis

Brandon Ross, a talented but perpetually overlooked screenwriter, balances a corporate marketing career with teaching screenwriting while chasing the breakthrough that has eluded him for years. After his incarcerated older brother, Tyler, dies of an apparent overdose, Brandon receives a box of his belongings, including a handwritten prison screenplay. When Brandon impulsively submits the script under his own name, it earns a sensational industry score and launches him into Hollywood, finally giving him the success he has always craved. But as the film gains momentum, a former inmate named Max begins confronting Brandon, claiming to know the truth about the screenplay’s origins. Through increasingly unsettling encounters, Max forces Brandon to confront the difference between technical craft and lived experience, while Brandon’s guilt slowly erodes his marriage, confidence, and sense of safety. Haunted by the realization that he has stolen not only Tyler’s words but his voice, Brandon publicly confesses that the acclaimed screenplay was written by his brother. His admission destroys his career but restores his integrity. In the film’s final twist, we see that we've been watching a movie, and the script was written by Brandon and Tyler, working together from prison. The brothers premiere their film as equal co-writers, revealing that true artistic success comes not from recognition alone, but from honesty, generosity, and the courage to share authorship.
