A reinvention of the medieval French fairy tale as a horror romance for adults, in which Belle and the Beast are transformed by love in more complex ways than in the Cocteau or Disney versions. The Beast is a moody, noble savage with magical powers who loves all beauty but despises his own ugliness. Once a handsome heartbreaker, he's cursed with a beastly body, imprisoned in an enchanted castle until the day a woman swears her love to him. Belle is a loner with an idealized sense of romance outside the real world, until she becomes the prisoner/guest of the Beast. Her fear and pity of him turns to friendship and finally to love.
